—MNL48

MNL48 (in short of Manila48) is a twenty-four members girl group under Hallo Hallo Entertainment. Formed through the AKB48's Philippine version of Idol That You Can Meet. Originally as fourty-eight, The group officially debuted and formed on April 29, 2018, with their first debut single album, Aitakatta (Gustong Makita), that was officially released on September 14, 2018.

As of August 31, 2023, the group has twenty-four members from 1st to 3rd Generation. The group is divided into four teams, Team MII, Team NIV, Team L and the Team Unknown.

They're the 3rd international sister group of Japanese idol girl group AKB48, after Indonesia's JKT48 (1st international sister group), China's SNH48 (2nd international sister group and a former AKB48 Group) and Thailand's BNK48 (3rd international sister group).

They're the only AKB48 sister group that debuted with exactly 48 members on its First Generation.

The group was dubbed as the "P-pop Idol Pioneers".[2]

Career[]

2016–2018: Pre-debut[]

On March 26, 2016, during the encore of AKB48's Spring Concert and AKB48 Takamina's Graduation concert, Shuku Takahashi Minami Graduation "148.5cm no Mita Yume" in Yokohama Stadium, the VTR released on the screen and announced that AKB48 will have a new three formation of overseas sister group: BNK48 of Bangkok, Thailand; MNL48 of Manila, Philippines; and TPE48 of Taipei, Taiwan.[3][4]

On December 3, 2016, during the visit of AKB48 Team 8 members in the Philippines, MNL48 was introduced to the general public through the ABS–CBN's noontime variety show, It's Showtime, as well the launch of the MNL48 app, which will serve as the gateway for aspiring applicants.

On August 24, 2017, Hallo Hallo Entertainment (HHE), the agency behind MNL48, announced the partnership with one of the largest broadcasting companies in the Philippines, ABS-CBN, to form and promote the upcoming girl group in the country, MNL48.[5][6][7]

On September 17, 2017, Hallo Hallo Entertainment, officially signed a partnership agreement with ABS-CBN Corporation.[8] On October 13, 2017, Hallo Hallo Entertainment announced the registration and audition tour dates for MNL48's 1st Generation members. On November 10, 2017, Hallo Hallo Entertainment holds 1st audition for MNL48's 1st Generation.

On January 20, 2018, ABS-CBN's "It's Showtime", officially announced the top 200 members who qualified for the next round of competition. Throughout the competition, the aspiring candidates fought all the way to secure the top 48 spots, which are judged based through a combination of panel of judges and online voting via the MNL48 app.[9]

2018: Final formation, Trixie, Zen, Mae & Van graduate from the group, Official debut, "Pag-Ibig Fortune Cookie" and "Amazing Grace"[]

On April 28, after 3 months of competition, the group is finally formed as fourty-eight, Shekinah Igarta Arzaga was hailed as the 1st Generation Center Girl. Six days after the "Meet Your Oshimen", the 1st General Election took place at ABS-CBN, where Alice Margarita De Leon was elected as the overall team captain, as well as the team leader of Team MII. Members Ericka Joyce Sibug and Kaede Ishiyama were also elected as team leaders of Team NIV and Team L, respectively.[10]

On June 3, the MNL48 1st Fanmeeting was held at Eton Centris Elements. The 1st generation members performed the Tagalized version of Aitakatta, Heavy Rotation and Sakura no Hanabiratachi for the very first time.[citation needed]

On June 8, less than week after the 1st Fanmeeting, two former top 7 members, Trixie Tano and Zen Inot announced their plans "to graduate" the group due to personal reasons. Their places were replaced by Ella Mae Amat and Ashley Cloud Garcia, who were part of the Top 16 girls of the group. Other members Mae Batocael and Vanessa Yap also said that they are leaving, paving the way for Alyssa Nicole Garcia and Princess Erica Sanico to take their spots in the rankings within MNL48. To fill the gap left by the four members who exited, Sandee Garcia, Coleen Trinidad, Francinne Rifol and Niña Editha Guirnalda were plucked from the roster of trainees, dubbed "Kenkyuusei," as replacements.[11]

On August 14, the group officially released their first debut single album titled, "Aitakatta (Guston Makita)" under ABS-CBN's Star Music.[12]

On November 25, the group officially released their first comeback single titled, "Pag-Ibig Fortune Cookie".

On December 24, during the Christmas Eve day, the group released their first special single, "Amazing Grace, performed by MNL48 Gospel Unit. The song is an acapella rendition from Chris Tomlin's version of Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone).[13]

2019 (1): 1st concert participation with AKB48, 2nd Generation audition and election, "365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel", 1st Generation concert, Ericka, Necca, Nice, Cassey, Sha, Hazel, Madie, & Jewel graduated from the group, Cess dismissed from the group, Quincy departure from the group, Sayaka graduated from the group, "Ikaw Ang Melody", and 2nd Generation concert[]

On January 27, the group participated for the first time in AKB48 Group Asia Festival Concert in Bangkok, where they performed with other international sister groups of AKB48 including JKT48, BNK48, SGO48, AKB48 Team SH, and AKB48 Team TP.[14]

On January 31, the group announced it's 2nd Generation Audition in their official SNS, the audition was privately runs until February 28, where 21 girls were selected and will be a candidate for 2nd General Election. According to MNL48's Producer Paulo Kurosawa, Only 48 members will be chosen to be a part of MNL48 Second Year and the one who didn't made it will graduate to their group.[15]

On February 26, the group announced the Senbatsu lineup for the upcoming 3rd comeback single release. On April 5, the first track for their 3rd comeback single titled, "365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel" was released.

On April 6, MNL48 held it's first own concert, "MNL48 First Generation: Living the Dream the Concert" at New Frontier Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila where all members including trainees performed and 2nd generation, candidates was introduced to promote for it's 2nd General Election.[16] On April 11, the 3rd single album "365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel" was officially released along with its CD album.[17] This is the first single to include a song from SKE48's 21st single and is covered by Team L. This is the last single participation of Sayaka Awane, Lorraine Leigh Lacumba, Quincy Josiah Santillan and Shaina Duran. And also, this single contains a voting ticket for the upcoming MNL48 2nd General Election.

On April 27, 2nd General Election was held where Jhona Alyanah Padillo new center was announced. Seven 2nd Generation Candidates and Five Kenkyuusei (Trainee) were promoted to MNL48's official members and was assigned to their new respective teams.[18] On May 1, Ericka, Necca, Nice, Cassey, Sha, Hazel, Madie, and Jewel were announced graduated from the group. However, some of them returned as Trainee including some of unchosen 2nd Generation Candidates as Mr. Paulo Kurosawa announced that there will be a collaboration with Tokyo Girls Collection during their press conference, they was chosen after the audition process.[19]

On May 10, Princess Labay as dismissed from the group due to her violations.

On May 23, Quincy Josiah Santillan announced the departure from the group.

On June 9, Sayaka Awane graduated from the group. She's originally included in the 4th single Senbatsu lineup but Althea Itona will now be part of the Senbatsu's main song from being an Undergirls center.[citation needed]

On July 27, the group officially released the 4th single album, "Ikaw ang Melody" centered by Aly.

On September 6, the group announced their 2nd independent concert entitled "MNL48 2nd Generation Concert: No to Oshihen!". The location of their 2nd concert will be held on Star Theater in Star City Amusement Park, Pasay City, starting October 6.[20]

2019 (2): Ash graduated from the group, "High Tension", and PARTY ga Hajimaru yo[]

On September 15, Ashley Cloud Garcia graduated from the group.

On October 4, the group was unveiled as a new Kapamilya artist as they signed an exclusive contract with ABS-CBN together with South Korean girl group, MOMOLAND.[21]

On October 16, the group announced the 5th single title track, "High Tension. On November 25, the group officially released their 5th single, High Tension, centered by Gabrielle Skribikin. On December 10, the group announced for their upcoming 1st stage PARTY ga Hajimaru yo, a revival from AKB48's Team A 1st Stage. The Shonichi stage was scheduled on December 17 by Team L, but it was delayed for 3 times due to schedule conflict.

2020: Dani departure from the group, Faith graduate from the group, "River", 3rd Generation, Rans graduated from the group, BABY BLUE, Yssa, Ecka, Rowee, Lei, Joyce, Rans graduated from the group, "River", Belle & Sela graduated from the group, "Hashlove", Shaina, Shaira and Emz departure from the group[]

On January 13, Daniella Mae Palmero announced her departure from the group due to violating "love ban" rule.

On January 26, the day after the Shonichi stage of Team MII, Faith Shanrae Santiago announced her graduation from the group.

On February 16, during the group's Valentine Mini Concert at Movie Stars Cafe, the group's sixth single title and senbatsu was announced. For the first time in MNL48's history, Gabb Skribikin and Abby Trinidad will be double centers for "River".[22]

On March 1, the group announced the 6th single coupling song Sampung Taon ng Sakura and the center is Jemimah Caldejon. On March 15, the 3rd generation member were announced, and will joining to 3rd General Election. A week later, Querubin Gonzalez withdrew from the group, also her candidacy for 3rd General Election.

On June 10, Francinne Rifol announced her graduation from Team MII, which she was originally included on 6th single Senbatsu line up, was replaced by Alice Margarita De Leon.[23][24]

On August 31, the top 3 members from Janken Senbatsu, which was held last November 3, 2019, was announced and formed BABY BLUE unit, where Jan will be the leader of their unit.

On September 1, the unit was officially debuted as three-member girl group with their first debut single, "Sweet Talking Sugar".[25]

On September 30, Mr. Paulo Kurosawa announced that the 3rd General Election would be the top 36 promoted members, and the top 37 to top 48 would be their 3rd year Kenkyuuseis. On the same day, Ericka Joyce Sibug announced her graduation from the group. She stated that she will cease her from Idol World.[26]

On October 20, Francinne Rifol announced her graduation from the group.

On October 30 to 31, the group held an virtual event of Miss Halloween Pageant, hosted by Sheki and Belle. On the same day, (except October 31), Jillian Shane Pilones withdrew from the group and her candidacy; and Chelsey Yssacky Bautista, Ericka Joyce Sibug, Lorraine Leigh Lacumba, Loulle Angelyn Villaflores, and Valerie Joyce Daita announced their graduation from the group.

On November 27, the group officially released their sixth comeback single titled "River".[27]

On November 28, the 1st preliminary results revealed on their official SNS. On the same day, Aubrey Ysabelle Delos Reyes announced her graduation from the group. Few hours after the preliminary result, during her Instagram live, 1st Generation member, Sela Guia announced that she will withdraw her candidacy from the third edition of MNL48's General Election and her departure the group. The following day, the 2nd preliminary results announced on their social media accounts, before closing their voting lines for their 3rd General Election.

On December 23, the group released their first original song and the second special single titled, "Hashlove".[28]

On December 31, HHE announced that they had terminated their contract with the Duran Twins (Shaina Duran and Shaira Duran) and Erica Maria Macabutas due to the rule violations.

2021 (1): 3rd General Election, Aly, Ice, Glaze, & Jash graduated from the group, Abby center, Sheki promoted as the group's overall captain, Alice graduated from the group[]

On February 6, their third general election announcement started. The top 48 members were announced in no particular order, which means that they will be the 3rd year members of the group. On the same day, Jhona Alyanah Padillo, Nicelle Joy Bozon, Glaciana Marie Pelagio, and Jashmin Iballo were now graduated from the group.

On February 13, they announced the top 48 to top 17. The top 48 to top 37 will be their 3rd year Kenkyuusei members. The newly members from 3rd generation candidates were ranked within top 36, they were promoted to Team Unknown.[29]

On February 20, they announced the top 16 to top 1 Senbatsu members for 3rd year, as well on upcoming 7th single release and their new Kami7 members. Also, Abby was hailed as their 3rd year center girl.[30][31] On February 25, Lorelaine Sañosa and Ruth Carla Dela Paz announced their graduation from the group.[32] On March 17, the group announced their new overall captain, Shekinah Arzaga, replacing Alice Margarita De Leon.[33]

On April 26, the management announced that they suspended Aubrey Binuya due to her violations until May 25. During her suspension period, she was not allowed by the management to use her SNS and attending MNL48 related activities.

On May 21, Alice announced her graduation. 2 days after her graduation announcement, the group announced that she was now replaced by Rianna on 7th single Senbatsu members.

2021 (2): AKB48 Group 3rd Asia Festival Concert, Brei, Gabb, Nile, Mari, and Kyla graduated from the group[]

On June 27, the group participated and performed along with sister groups in AKB48 Group 3rd Asia Festival Concert. Their location of their live performances through online happened at Lipa City Community Park, Lipa City, Batangas. It was their first time to have a live concert outside Metro Manila.

On June 29, two days after the 3rd AKB48 Group Asia Festival Concert, Aubrey Binuya and Gabrielle Skribikin were graduated from the group.

On July 20, Anne Nicole Casitas and Mariz Iyog were graduated from the group.

On August 7, Kyla Angelica Marie De Catalina graduated from the group.

On August 26, 1st Generation member Mari returned to the group but was later transferred to 3rd Generation.

On December 18, the group announced the 7th single Senbatsu line-up and the title track, "NO WAY MAN", centered by 3rd Generation center, Abelaine Trinidad.

2022: "NO WAY MAN", Jan and Jaydee graduated from the group, Indonesia TV debut, and 1st & 3rd generation captains[]

On April 1, the group officially released their 7th comeback single, "NO WAY MAN".[34][35]

On June 30, Cristine Jan Elaurza announced her graduation from the group.

On July 31, Jennifer Nandy Villaruel announced her graduation from the group.

On October 29, the group perform with its sister group JKT48 on RCTI's TikTok For You Stage making it as the first Filipino idol group to perform on Indonesian television.[36]

On December 15, the group held their Christmas Concert 2022 at Music Museum. In addition, the teams of the group will be based on generations, with newly hailed generation captains Yzabel (for 2nd Generation) and Lyza (for 3rd Generation).

2023: Generation captains, Team disbandments, Abby and Andi departure from the group, MNL48 FE5TIVAL, 4th Generation, upcoming 8th single, Dian and Gia's departure[]

On February 15, the group appointed newly team captains in terms of generations: Jemimah Caldejon for 1st Generation, Dana Yzabel Divinagracia for 2nd Generation, and Allyza Mae Roxas for 3rd Generation. All teams were disbanded and transferred all members to each generations after hailing their new captains.

On March 31, Abelaine Trinidad announced her departure from the group.[37]

On April 27, Sandee Garcia announced her departure from the group.[38]

On April 29, MNL48 celebrates its 5th anniversary with "MNL48 FE5TIVAL". During their anniversary event, the group announced that they will be releasing their 8th single soon.

On May 2, the group announced the opening of auditions for the group's upcoming 4th Generation.[39][40] The audition started on May 3 but later, the group announced that they will be extending the audition until June 30.[41]

On June 30, the audition for 4th Generation has been closed.[42]

On August 31, HHE announced the departure from the group due to pursue "personal goals" and "other opportunities" of two 1st Generation members, Dian and Gia.[43][44]
